Dark Ages
THE DARK AGES
Intense marketing and a resultant 150% rise in the numbers of prescriptions written has resulted in a growing number of people addicted to prescription drugs.
In a recent press conference Joseph A. Califano Jr., the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University’s director and president said:
"Aggressive marketing of controlled drugs to physicians . . . is designed to increase profits with little regard for abuse potential, Our nation is in the throes of an epidemic of controlled prescription drug abuse and addiction."
The ease by which many Americans can get a prescription for powerful pain medications and psychiatric drugs is alarming.
Drug seekers are people that are trying to get high. They will say or do almost anything to get what they want. Health care professionals who are just trying to help are unfortunately easy prey for these individuals.
Very few physicians receive any training in spotting drug seeking behavior. Pharmacists report more training but it is not they that actually write the prescriptions.
More than 15 million Americans abuse controlled substances—double the amount from a decade ago, according to a report issued by CASA. This represents a clear problem for America because there is virtually no increase in drug treatment available.
Califano said, “I am disturbed that more than 28 percent of pharmacists say they fail to regularly validate the prescribing physician's Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration number when dispensing controlled substances.Today more people are abusing controlled-prescription drugs than the combined number who abuse cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and heroin.”
Without educating pharmacists and physicians who prescribe these drugs on the signs for potential abuse, drug companies are guilty of criminal negligence.
Unless there is a dramatic increase in the availability of drug treatment for those already addicted, the epidemic will only increase.
History will view this era as a dark age – if civilization exists long enough to move into a more enlightened age.

Prescription Drugs
Michael Jackson’s Death Calling Attention to Prescription Drug Abuse
Close friend to Jackson, Deepak Chopra, reported that Jackson had asked him for prescriptions to pain killers in the past. Chopra said that he then realized that Michael must have been asking many people for prescriptions to the powerful drugs.
In an article in the Huffington Press, Chopra in part blames Jackson’s dependence on these drugs on medical colleagues who failed to realize Jackson’s growing addiction could lead to his death.
Jackson is known to have taken prescriptions ranging from Xanax to Demerol.
Oxycodone and hydrocodone are both synthetic opiate pain relievers similar to Demerol which Jackson is reported to have been injected with shortly before his cardiac arrest.
It is unfortunate that prescription drug abuse becomes alive as a topic for media discussion after a celebrity death. Anna Nicole’s and Heath Ledger’s deaths took center stage earlier, but the problem with prescription medication abuse continued to increase and emergency rooms are still seeing too many accidental overdoses.
In a recent press conference Joseph A. Califano Jr., the National Center on Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University’s director and president said:

Narconon of Georgia provides drug treatment and education for the entire southeast region. Narconon Drug Rehab of Georgia is a non-traditional drug abuse treatment program.

Reflection
NARCONON REFLECTION
Here is a Narconon reflection – written by someone who was abusing alcohol – but written for anyone who is abusing any drug. Whether it is oycontin, adderal, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine or any drug of abuse, the Narconon program is here to help you.
“Today in class I learned that pinpointing my problem and releasing my energy on it – I can let the thought pass. I think a problem is a kind of blemish to my well being and healthy life style – a blemish that can vanish with the right medicine. The medicine is how I handle situations – and I can handle them the right way from now on from what I have learned.
The medicine is also in my action and thoughts. I will use my mind and strength to touch and get what I want. It is my choice, now that I know right from wrong.
I am a stronger individual today.
This can also apply to unhealthy relationships, friendships and disagreements.
I believe that sometimes it is just better to let things go and avoid trouble in my life.”
Simple realizations like this can take the course of someone’s life and move it in a different direction.

Insecurities
NARCONON SUCCESS STORY
“I realize that I can dispense with my insecurities and how I have felt about myself in the past. I know that those thoughts are really not what is happening. I need to keep what is real and what is true for me up front, because those thoughts are not worth my time or energy. I need to get rid of these thoughts as soon as they come up.
Things in my life are really moving and I can see that I have a lot of work to do to repair the damage that I did in the past. I can do that and still allow my life to move forward. It’s up to me to keep my sobriety in place and as long as this is my number one priority I can deal with and accomplish anything.”
Anything can be accomplished, whether a person has abused heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine or pot. A new life is waiting for those who honestly do the Narconon program.

Drug Dealers vs Drug Addicts
See the article below from the Independent Mail. It seems that the District Attorney has the right idea here and at Narconon we are anxiously awaiting the outcome of finding treatment for offenders who are addicts. According to the article:
“TOCCOA, Ga. — Brian Rickman, district attorney for the Georgia Mountain Judicial Circuit, draws a clear line between drug addicts and drug dealers.
“We believe there is a fundamental difference in the addict and the dealer,” he explained. “The addict, while they have to be responsible for their actions, can be helped with treatment. The dealer is making money off the misery of someone else.”
With that distinction, Rickman and his staff at the Mountain Judicial Circuit DA’s office are taking a new and creative approach to handling drug crimes.
The DA’s office has recently begun partnering with the Stephens County Anti-drug Coalition to match drug addicts who have been arrested for drug possession with qualified treatment programs. Part of the condition of that person’s bond is successfully completing the treatment program, Rickman said.
“Our philosophy is that with non-violent addicts, we want to find creative ways to use treatment rather than have them sit in the county jail. On the flip side, by freeing up resources that we would use on those cases, our time can be spent on taking it to the dealers,” he said.”
Good idea Toccoa! Any addict at least deserves one chance at treatment – whether they have abused heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine or prescription medication – Thanks for giving them a chance.

The Past
Narconon Success Story
Here is another Narconon Success Story. It is another victory over slavery and celebrated by this student with the same enthusiasm that many celebrated Martin Luther King’s birthday (which is obviously quite important.)
“I have faced my past and everything in it – my old friends and my old life style. The past is behind me and the future with its new friends and life style is in front of me. I cannot see my future if I am focused on the past.
I learned today that drugs are nothing but a repetitious cycle of damage. The end result is always the same with drugs.
I know I am powerful because I will not let drugs back into my life. I’m the only one who had control over my past and I’m the only one who has control over my future and my future can be anything I want it to be!”
Whether they arrive for addiction toheroin, pot, methamphetamine, cocaine or any other drug of abuse, the result is the same for those who honestly complete the Narconon drug treatment program - a new life. 877-413-3073

NARCONON SUCCESS
While the world is worried about financial stability, Narconon students remind us that many things in life don’t cost much at all, but are priceless. Here is another Narconon success story.
“I can find just about anything these days. Since beingdrug free I find that working out, eating well, sleeping well and being positive are all the things that touch me the right way.
In the present, being drug free allows me to live life the way I want to live it. I have also made up my mind to let go of the past and live in the present. I decide what I do and don’t do because I am empowered to do so. I have faith that being drug free will allow good things to happen. The program will give me the skills to deal with the bad and let go of it when the time is right. I make up my mind and have faith that it is going to work out because my mind and body are working the way that they are supposed to.
I have now confronted the damage drugs have done, gotten better and taken control.”
The wins are there – whether a person has abused pot, alcohol or methamphetamine, there is a new life waiting for those who want it. Narconon is the New Life Program. 877-413-3073.

Say No
JUST SAY NO
Here is the success of a Narconon student who has learned how to say NO to drugs and yes to success.
“Just because you find drugs doesn’t mean you have to do them. I was at the movies on Monday and some dude came up to me and asked if I would give him money in exchange for some drugs so he could get home. I told him to get away from me and that I didn’t do that shit. Drugs found me and I chose to not touch them because I have let go of that life style and those cravings of artificial pleasures.
I am empowered and in the present. I apply strength, intention and commitment to a healthy life style that bears way more fruit than drugs ever did or could. By making up my mind just because I am around drugs doesn’t mean I have to do them anymore. In fact, I don’t want to do them. They disgust me and so do people who are on them.
I found Narconon, I made up my mind to embrace it and because of that I have let go of a drug infested and negative life style. I have moved into a healthy and positive drug free present.”
Whether they came here on heroin, Oxycontin, methamphetamine, cocaine or pot, our students are saying NO drugs and YES to happiness and success.

Oxycontin
OXYCONTIN
http://www.thenewstribune.com/front/topstories/story/599029.html
At Narconon we frequently meet individuals who are addicted to Oxycontin. This drug can affect anyone from any strata of life. There are stories of people who took Oxycontin for a simple sports injury or after a surgery and became hopelessly addicted. Some got it from a friend just for fun, but were addicted after that first pill.
Oxycontin can take a person from the path of a normal life to another path – one that is ruthlessly led by addiction.
It is unfortunate that this drug was ever created - but it was and many good people are addicted. The recent criminal conviction of key executives of Purdue pharmaceutical does not seem to have stopped or slowed down the number of persons that we speak to that are addicted to Oxycontin.
It is going to take the friends and families and effective drug treatment to do something effective about Oxycontin. We have to roll our sleeves up and one by one, get these people some help.
At Narconon we have helped many overcome their Oxycontin addiction and they are now living a drug free and happy life. 877-413-3073

NARCONON SUCCESS
Here is another Narconon success story – one of many that we will have today.
“I have the ability to think my decision through before I act and to see if it’s the right or correct action to take. Most of my life I acted without weighing the consequences and I was a very non-reflective person. I could not process the thoughts to make a decision or to think things through. My whole life was act and react on first thought or impulse. Today, I don’t have to do this. I can think things though, weigh out my pros and cons and decide how I want to act or react.
I have the ability to make things easy or difficult in my life. I chose to make things difficult for myself when there was a better way to live or handle situations. I always chose the most negative or difficult way to do something.
I can choose now how easy or difficult I make things for myself.”
Anyone can learn to make better decisions. There is a New Life available for anyone. Whether they have been abusing heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine or Oxycontin a new life is waiting for them if they want it.

Risky Behaviors
This article shows that we CAN have a positive influence on our teens, despite the negative and dangerous messages that come at them everyday through the internet and television. According to this article in Join Together:
“Researchers say that half of teen MySpace sites include references to sex, drug use, or other high-risk behavior, with 41 percent of sites studied featuring drug-related information, Reuters reported Jan. 6.
In one study, researcher Dimitri Christakis of Seattle Children's Research Institute and Megan Moreno of the University of Wisconsin looked at randomly chosen profiles of 18-year-olds on the social-networking site MySpace and found that 54 percent of profiles available to the public showed information regarding high risk behavior.
The researchers sent messages to 95 adults ages 18 to 20 whose profiles showed risky behavior, warning them of the risks of sharing such information on the internet and providing a link to a website with information about sexually transmitted diseases. A second study found that many of the subjects subsequently removed references to sex and substance abuse or limited viewing privileges on their profiles.”
The good news is that some teens responded to warnings about sharing certain information on the web and removed the references to sex and substance abuse from their sites.
The point is that no one was sending these teens the positive message they needed – when they got it, there was response.
We can’t let our kids continue to play in the middle of the information highway where they can be hit from any side by deadly information without at least a few crossing guards to help them to safety.
Narconon can help with drug education. There is a lot of drug talk on the web and kids can get into trouble. We talk straight and we talk truth. 877-413-3073

Being Negative
Here is another success story from today. It is from a Narconon student and it represents a life saved.
“I realize when I choose people or things I like, it makes my happy. Whenever I think of anything bad, my mood drops. I don’t even have to say it out loud and the negativity has a bad effect on me. I don’t even have to say it out loud and the negativity has a bad effect on me. The same happens when I permit good things or people to remain in place. I also feel much better when I dispense with bad things or situations.
I have to make the conscious decision to have good things and people so I remain happy and sober as well as dispense with the bad to keep my sobriety and happiness also.
After naming objects that I could have I realized that certain things that I can have open doors to other wonderful things. Having this program allows me to have my sobriety and happiness. Having my education allows me to have a good career and have a successful life. Once I obtain certain larger things in my life. I also gain a plethora of other good things. Setting large goals gives me the determination to get them and have all of the ripple effects. I also gain a plethora of other good things. Setting large goals gives me the determination to get them and have all of the ripple effects as well.

I know that I could have, let things stay in place, or dispense of anything in the room or in my life. I realized when I choose people or things I like to have I am happy. I know I have the power to do all 3 things to anything but I have to make the concsious decision to have good things and people so I remain happy and sober as well as dispense the bad to keep my soberity and happiness also.

Rebuilding
Here is another success story from a Narconon of Georgia student. The success story bodes well for the future of this student in 2009.
“It is essential to be aware of what you can have from your environment that serves your benefit. It is also crucial to be aware of distractions and counter productive things in y our environment. Interact embrace and obtain things that you need and that promoted wellness within. Ignore of the worldly things and people who seek to deviate wellness and promote more negative than positives.
Rebuilding my world is easy. I choose to interact with things that serve me well. Symbiotic relationships are necessary for progress. I dispense of poisons and have success.
I have good things so I allow them to remain in place as long as they stay good.”
This could be the success story of anyone – whether it be a heroin, cocaine, or Oxycontin user. Narconon success carries on. 877-413-3073

Obstacles
Here is another Narconon success. I hope that it makes it way to someone who needs some hope – The hope we give is real.
“Life throws many obstacles at you. There is always a way around or though those obstacles. One always has a choice. One should assess the situation, analyze the best way to get through it and then choose the appropriate course of action that best benefits himself and his environment.
If I am offered a drug, I can accept or decline. The obstacle is the drug, the choices are simple, but the course of action is much more complex.
If I decline, I maintain a body and mind of sound quality or even strengthen it. Also the environment and those in it can stay the same or hopefully I can affect them and that environment positively. By saying “no”, some might see the error in their ways and the environment has one less affected subject. Any progress no matter if slight or large is progress. The potential is the point here. In the process of declining to use the potential for positive growth in me, those around me and the environment is greater.”
Narconon is the New life program and we have successes like this every day. Whether it is heroin, methamphetamine, pot, cocaine or oxycontin – the result is the same – a new life. 877-413-3073

Underage Drinking
A DENT IN UNDERAGE DRINKING
Recently a restaurant in Georgia lost its liquor license because it had been serving minors. Pictures of the minors drinking were on My Space and the restaurant got caught.
If the owners of the restaurants understood how underage drinking can ruin lives, they would have stopped selling to these minors. (Unless they are sadistic).
The statistics for heavy underage drinkers are not good. They are more likely to drop out of school and have low end jobs. Their lives just don’t turn out well.
American kids start abusing alcohol at an earlier age than their European counterparts and there is a reason. That reason is the adults.
If enough adults just say NO to participating in underage drinking the statistics will reverse.
Narconon provides drug prevention.
We also have affordable drug rehab. 877-413-3073

If enough adults just say NO to participating in underage drinking the statistics will reverse.
Narconon provides drug prevention.
We also have affordable drug rehab. 877-413-3073

Attitude Adjustment
SUCCESS FROM A NARCONON STUDENT
This is really the week of successes! Here again today is another success story from a Narconon student who is in drug treatment. No matter what is going on, I know that I can arrive to Narconon and hear the wins from the students who are turning their lives around.
“I’ve just realized the amazing attitude change in me towards females. When I first came in here I hated every girl that came in my path, but over this period of time here there has been a drastic change in my mentality and I have now made a few friendships that I hold close to my heart. My stubborn ways subsided and the opportunities of growth prospered.
I am also aware now that my family loves me for me and by seeing me go through thick and thin they ignored me while I was using and backed off so they wouldn’t get to know the me I was while using. They have watched me change now and our relationships can flourish.”
Sadly, quite often, addiction ruins relationships. But any relationship can be repaired, using the right tools.
Narconon is the New Life Program and it can help mend broken lives with no thought to the past, only a wonderful future.

Obligations
NARCONON SUCCESS
Today many students are reporting success and here is another one. Regardless of what is going on in the world with the economy and the stress of the holiday season coming on, we always have joy to report from Narconon of Georgia.
“Dealing with my father situation again, I thought it was going to be hard. I’ve come to terms with it. I have realized that I have the willingness to change myself to make a situation feasible so I can make the best out of it and add wisdom to my life. Since part one of the course, I have noticed I am very good at starting something in my life and I’m willing to change more than ever before.
While I was using, I would make obligations but change and never fulfill them. That’s not the case anymore. I’ve also always been a functioning addict and no matter what I did, I did it well. My job became a huge increasing factor to my drug use and I couldn’t’ force myself to quit, even though I knew it was not OK for me. It was like I was attached. I was forced to quit. When I came to rehab and it was the best change ever and I see that now and I won’t ever put myself in that situation again.”
These are the kinds of wins that anyone can have at Narconon of Georgia. Methamphetamine, ecstasy, cocaine, marijuana, heroin or other drugs – the help is here at the New Life program. 877-413-3073

Baby Steps
Success Story from a Narconon Student
Today I had the privilege of having someone present this success story.
“During my using years the changes in my life were not okay, they were negative. Now that I’ve found a good change I can stop my addiction and maintain sobriety. I see that during my using years I often jumped too far ahead, gave myself too steep of a gradient or jumped to conclusions. I never stepped back and dealt with things or tried to fix what I was losing grasp of. Because of this, I lost everything. I also see that I always thought my life was full of these huge problems. Instead of changing these issues or elements in my life they started and I never changed them. Because of this I had no control- there was not a start, change or stop so everything slowly but surely slipped away. Seeing the different sized objects I see now that no matter how big the problems in my life were, I solved them the same; I used. I never changed anything because I just didn’t care
Baby steps are what works for me changing the elements in my life, little by little the tons of small problems can be solved and a big picture can be clear. I’ve learned that it’s important to do this because otherwise I’ll always think of my addiction.
Since starting this course my awareness to the fact change is important and okay and necessary to grow.
I see how important it is to my addiction so no that I maintain sobriety I can change the factors that were not okay and I’ll be able to accept the change.”
Anyone with a problem methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, marijuana, oxycontin or any drug can make a change for the better in their life with the Narconon New Life Program. 877 413-3073

Rehab vs. Incarceration
REHAB VERSUS INCARCERATION
This recent study confirms what those of us who have worked in rehab already knew – Rehab does make a difference and is a viable alternative to incarceration. It is a better alternative for the addict, family and society.
Drug addicts already have a lowered sense of self esteem. Their addiction has driven them to do things that they would not ordinarily do and they feel ashamed. Jail just confirms what they are already starting to believe – that they are no good and there is no hope.
Drug treatment, on the other hand and at the very least, provides a caring atmosphere from which a person can get clean and examine who they really are. Upon examination, most individuals learn that they are basically good people who simply took a wrong turn. From this viewpoint it is easy to decide to learn from rehab and take a new direction in life.
Locking someone up confirms that notion that one is no good. It is not wonder that crime rates are higher when drug addicts are locked up.
Narconon is a good alternative to incarceration and in fact, this Narconon was started as an alternative to incarceration. The first 20 Narconon of Georgia clients came directly from jail as part of a pilot to determine the feasibility of rehab vs. incarceration.
Whether it is crack cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana oxycontin or any other drug, the results are the same. Most people can either be fully rehabilitated from addiction or they can be pushed further into the mud and their lives totally ruined.
It is up to us to say which that will be.
