Prevention Watch

Prevention Watch

Intravenous drug abuse has increased over the last decade and as many as 3 million people might be HIV positive world wide.

In the United States approximately 15% of the IV users are HIV positive. While this information might appear to be irrelevant to most Americans, who have a lot to think about right now, if one has teenagers in the house, it is time to have a family talk.

Over the last decade heroin has crept into new neighborhoods and has tapped younger people on the shoulder with its allure, apparently without proper warning. Without effective drug education, not only is overdose a possibility for a young user, but so is an infected needle.

Once a person has HIV they have it for a lifetime. HIV compromises life style, general health and finance.

With proper drug education and prevention measures HIV can be prevented.

Talk to your kids.

Alcohol

Someone needs to get the message across to kids that a life with alcohol can become a life that is really no fun. While there is no lack of communication about the virtues of alcohol, including the example set by adults, there is a dearth of information that contradicts the extolled virtues of drinking.

Even the reasoning voice of a parent can be droned out by magazine ads and television promoting the youthfulness and fun of alcohol. No one in these ads looks the least bit compromised by the alcohol – in fact it appears alcohol makes them gorgeous and confident. No one is stumbling about.

We need a third party communication that kids will accept that teaches them the real dangers of alcohol.

Narconon drug education is that. It is interactive and kids like it. They learn through communication, not being lectured at.

Call us if you need more information.

If someone you know got the message too late and has a drinking problem, call us at 877-413-3073. We are the New Life Program and we have a 76% success rate.

Monday at NARCONON

My Monday at NARCONON..It started out very well which for a Monday morning in Atlanta it's a good thing. Traffic wasn't bad at all and I actually got to work early. WOOHOOO! I came in and started working on all my work at NARCONON to get my week started off right. The students started coming in and they were really happy and go lucky for a Monday morning! I realized we had 5 more new students here at NARCONON which is always a good sign. It means that we are really on track to help people with their addictions. It makes me feel good knowing that they will succeed and join their families in a few months clean and sober! After all the introductions I proceeded through my day. We are going to have 1 graduation this week here at NARCONON and I am thrilled! I will definetely blog about that one this week. I got home at 7:15pm last night and had a great night with my kids and my husband. We watched wrestling (our Monday night thing as a family, I know redneck :-) ) I went to bed about 11:15pm and now I am back at work on this beautiful Tuesday morning. I am blessed to be here and today is going to be an awesome day.....

Mandatory Sentencing

According to a recent poll, sixty percent of Americans oppose laws mandating minimum prison terms for non-violent crimes, such as drug offenses, according to the Christian Monitor.
Mandatory sentencing means that there is no individual justice. A Judge, upon seeing someone turn their life around, after a drug related brush with the law, must give them the same sentence as someone who has no intention to improve their lot. The only similarity is the drugs they were caught with. This leaves the courts, not the Judges imposing the sentence.
This means that more individuals realize that mandatory sentencing laws for drug possession can make effective drug rehab meaningless in the eyes of the law. An offender, who is a drug abuser, may be charged with a drug related crime, graduate from successful drug treatment and turn their life around, only to be sent to prison. There is no one who benefits from this and society could lose potentially productive individuals to prison where they are likely to be ruined.

Is it any wonder that we have the highest per capita rate of incarceration in the world?

Hopefully the public will make their voices heard about this issue. After all, they are the ones footing the bill.

NARCONON Success Story 2

I recently had some great realizations and a few of them have been at home. Most of the time I experience them while laying in bed just before I got to sleep, however the past cognition I had yesterday while in the gym working out.

I realized how out of shape, I’ve let myself become and that I haven’t been in a gym in years and that this is a direct result of doing drugs. You see, many years I was to drugged up or sedated to have energy or care about my physique. I mostly realized that have been robbed of my ambition in all aspects of my life. I have not followed through on a single thing in many years.

I’ve defiantly noticed how easy it is to commit to things now and how ambitious I’ve been lately. My body will now be in better shape and my life can be in better shape too! I’ve been working out everyday and I’m ready to make some long term goals and commitments to improve my life!

My ambitions is back baby!!

NARCONON Success Story 1

During the objectives course, I realized it is much easier to bring something into your life than it is to get rid of that thing. It was really easy (and fun) to bring drugs in to my life, but it became a monster that I could not put away. That is the nature of the sin and wickedness. It presents itself to you as something attractive and easy to possess. Before you realize the danger, you have become a slave to that evil, and can’t get out. I must be extremely careful of what I allow into, life. I must learn to recognize good and evil as it truly is, and be deceived. If you or a family needs help please contact NARCONON at

This is NARCONON at the Gwinnett Co fair. We personally talked to so many people during the week of the fair we literally couldn't keep count. NARCONON of Georgia really made their presence known this year by making big statement against drugsno.com! We had a pledge that youth signed that they would not do drugs and they got gifts and different things. NARCONON really is spreading the word about addiction and recovery with a whole lot of education to support. We had Gordy and many students that support NARCONON out in the crowd. It was great to see our successes out in the public eye and not ashamed to say "Hey! I was a NARCONON graduate, let me help you!"If you need help or know someone who does, contact us at

Recovery Month Coming to an end....

Recovery Month

As Recovery Month is ending, we pay tribute to those who brought the message of effective drug prevention and workable treatment to their communities.

Above all, we salute those who had the courage to begin or continue their drug or alcohol treatment and extend our good wishes for complete recovery.

Around the world this month, community events and lectures brought home the fact that addiction can be prevented or alleviated. For once, through combined efforts, perhaps the voices promoting a drug free life were louder than the social climates or advertisements that entice with the allure of complete medicinal solutions for every problem.

Narconon of Georgia set up a booth at a large county fair for two weeks. Kids were a toy after reading, agreeing to and signing a drug free pledge. Every parent was happily involved in making sure their child understood what they were signing.

Others came to the staff and volunteers in the booth seeking help for addiction, either for them selves or a family member. The booth was busy the entire time, making clear the fact that addiction in indeed a wide spread problem and people are eager for solution. It was also quite evident that people often do not know where to go for solutions.

Every month is recovery month at Narconon of Georgia and we are here to service. Please let us know if someone you know needs drug treatment.

We have a 76% success rate – we are the New Life Program.

Drug Prevention in Communities

Drug Prevention in Drug Free Communities

Investing in drug prevention is worthwhile according to a new report from the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The report says that alcohol and drug use is down in those communities with Drug Free Coalition Funding – in fact, 10 to 23 % lower than the national average.

Though the financial gain to a community and a country cannot probably be accurately assessed at this time, the long term gain is apparent. Fewer drug abusers means less crime, more productivity and fewer health problems.
The Drug Free Communities are made of community leaders, teachers etc and grants are available for those organizations that facilitate citizen participation.
The value of life is improved for individuals and their families and money can be spent on vacations, rather than rehab.

This is probably the most logical and sound investment that any of us have seen in a long time, with a realistic and measurable return on investment. Let’s hope more get involved.

My Friday and beyond.....

My day at NARCONON started out just trying to get there. Here in Atlanta there is no gas to be found and when you find it you have to wait an hour or longer to get it. It is so ridiculous! Anyway, I made it to NARCONON on time and immediately started setting up for what would be a very productive day at NARCONON. We had 2 student birthdays which is always fun. It's always nice to see the students drug-free, many celebrating there birthdays sober and clean for the first time since childhood. It really brings a smile to your face to see them happy and they know that NARCONON really does care about them. I worked really hard yesterday and left work and didn't get home for 3 hours because you guess it GAS! I mean geez....How am I suppose to help these people if I can't even do anything. But I have gas now and I am home and today is Saturday and I plan on spending it with my boys! I go back to NARCONON on Monday.....

My day....

My day at NARCONON was my first day back in the office for a couple of days which always makes for a hectic start to the day. Today at NARCONON was very productive however. I talked to several family members about helping get their family members off drugs and I even talked to a probation officer who is going to recommend sentencing to our facility because of th 76% success rate. I love seeing people walk out of NARCONON drug free and/or alcohol free. They just fall into their famliies arms and it warms my heart. Today I made sure more radio stations got our new Public Service Announcement about the danger of Prescription Drugs that is on the rise with our teenagers. It is truly a scary thought! I am just thankful for the opportunity to help everyone whip the addiction. Well, it's time to get the kids ready for bed and then it's off to bed for me and the hunt for gas in Atlanta will be on tomorrow morning! Wish me luck! My town is completely out of gas.....YUCK!

My Wednesday

Ok, Where should I start. I guess I will start with this morning. I always work from home on Wednesday's. It's easier to get a few more things done for NARCONON if I am home because it's private and I can get personal with people if they would like to talk about DRUGS and/or ALCOHOL abuse. I did call in to check on the office of NARCONON today and we did get a new student which makes me happy. That is one more person that we can help get rid of their ADDICTION. The rest of my day went as follows....I had to take my son to get stitches out of his little head. I felt so bad...then we went to my in-laws house and had an awesome dinner. We came home and it is bath night for the boys so they got their bath and I changed their linens on their bed. (I can't stand dirty sheets!). Anyway, it's time for my bath and beddy bye time so I can get up in the morning and go to work at NARCONON and help more and more people get off of drugs. If they only knew what a sober life feels like. It makes a difference when you play with your children. It really does!I will blog tomorrow! Till then nite nite!

What's in your medicine cabinet?

What’s In Your Medicine Cabinet?

If you have Oxycodone in the cabinet and kids in the house, beware. According to scientists at Rockefeller University adolescents are more likely to become addicted to Oxycodone than adults.

http://www.jointogether.org/news/research/summaries/2008/oxycodone-more-addictive-for.html

The research was done on mice and though we cannot be sure that adolescent humans react the same as adolescent mice, common sense dictates that drugs and developing brains are not a good combination.

Regardless of the obvious physical developmental problems for addicted kids, mental and ethical development is also stunted. When they should be learning life’s important lessons and opening the books, these kids are busy hunting drugs so they don’t have to experience the anguish of withdrawal. Fighting withdrawal can be an all consuming job, with time for little else.

Some kids get off drugs and open their eyes to the world, only to realize that they haven’t been to a movie or really had a good time for years. A frequent comment is “I didn’t know I could have this much fun straight.”

Life is great without pills. Give your kids the chance to learn this and lock up the prescription medicine.

If they have already gotten on the path of addiction, get them off fast and call Narconon at 877-413-3073. We are a drug treatment center with a 76% success rate.

Yellow Tape

What’s In Your Medicine Cabinet?

Many American medicine cabinets need yellow crime scene tape in front of them. They have become the scene of some serious crimes.

Recently and amazingly enough a potentially lethal crime was perpetrated on my aging mother. Looking in her medicine cabinet for relief from minor discomfort she saw a bottle that said oxycodine. Remembering as a child the relief she got from cough syrup with codeine and mistaking it for the same thing she took a swig. She drove a half mile down the road to make her doctor’s appointment and ran into the dumpster in the parking lot. She composed herself enough to walk into the office then nearly collapsed on the floor in a drunken like stupor, remarking to the front desk that she had never had such a reaction to codeine before.

Obviously the lethal weapon has been taken away from her and her medicine cabinet searched. She is not one for medication so we did not find anything else. But the point is that this highly educated scholar and author found herself in an embarrassing situation because she had a bottle in her cabinet with a label she did not understand and no obvious visible warning on the possible hazards.
Benzos, opiates, stimulants – What’s In Your Medicine Cabinet? Find out for sure and take action to keep everyone safe.

If some pills are missing then get out the yellow crime scene tape and find the perpetrator before real damage occurs.

With billions of dollars of sales of pharmaceuticals, drugs have to be kept somewhere and that somewhere is usually the medicine cabinet.

My Monday and this morning

Yesterday was a really awesome day at work at NARCONON. I got many things accomplished and there it seemed that the office was running smoothly all day. It did help that I was in an awesome Go NARCONON mood. We were contacted by several people wanting treatment either for themselves or their family members. It was great. I got to talk about how great NARCONON is. Well, this morning I tried to get to work but several factors stopped me but that's ok I can still help people from the house. If anyone needs anything they can call me at home or my cell. I never stop working for NARCONON. As I have said before it is a 24 hour a day business and I am on board no matter what the issue. Well, I must start working or I won't be able to help people get off of drugs and alcohol. I will blog later!

Binge Drinking

We need the next generation to prepare itself for leadership by gaining knowledge through study. This is a little harder to do with an impaired mind. In other words, we don’t need binge drinking in high school and college.
Apparently, according to research, binge drinkers suffer from memory impairment and possible physical harm to their still forming brains.
“Researcher Thomas Heffernan and colleagues from Northumbria University and Kent University gave memory tests to a group of 26 binge drinkers ages 17-19 to a group of 34 non binge drinkers. The male binge drinkers consumed at least eight units of alcohol at one sitting, while the women had at least six units at one time.” (Reported by Join Together)
There are other obvious possible distractions to the binge drinker such as car accidents, DUIs and arrests – not helpful in preparing for the future or studying for exams.
Alcohol has always been around campuses – however it seemed like the majority of the students had enough sense to not ruin their lives through binge drinking and it was the minority that wasn’t really expected to set the world on fire anyway. With the recent “wizard stick” parties being promoted on the internet, we cannot assume that this is now the case. Someone needs to take heed and provide drug and alcohol education and enlighten these kids in a way that communicates.
If you need drug education brochures, we will provide them for you. If you know someone who is binge drinking they need help. Call us and we will help you get them help. We can help with interventions too.

My weekend

Geez, my weekend.....Where to start. Well I didn't have to go into work at NARCONON this weekend but that never stops me from doing something a little extra. I enjoy my job so much that I continue doing it since rehab is a 24 hour a day 7 day a week job. Anyway, yesterday we ended up at my brother in laws house for a little family reunion and I got to see my inlaws, all my nephews and 1 niece and my great nephew. It was great! Of course that didn't stop me from working on NARCONON things. We had hamburgers, hotdogs on the grill. YUMMY! My brother in law can cook! We left there picked up my husbands waitress for work and then her daughter watched my boys at my house so I could get a little more work done, yeap you guess it NARCONON. Anyway, I finally laid down about 10:30pm and got up about 9am this morning. I decided I wasn't going anywhere today I was just going to check emails from NARCONON and my personal emails. So that is what I did but somehow I messed up my server so I can't send messages out right now. ARGH, it's so annoying. Anyway, I am going to get ready for a wonderful Monday at Narconon. I always love to go in even though sometimes I just can't get there because it is so far. But the drive is so well worth it when I see the recovery coming out of the building. Anyway, I will blog tomorrow night! Till then....thats my boring weekend :-)1-877-413-3073

Drug Use Increasing in United States

The Federal Government’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health, (based on data gathered in 2007) revealed some interesting drug facts about our population:

1 in 20 Americans ages 50 -59 reported that they had used illicit drugs in the last month and half of those used marijuana and cocaine. The list of preferred drugs has expanded since the 60s and 70s for this generation and now includes prescription drugs. The survey report was unclear as to whether this generation has used drugs consistently since youth or reverted in later years.

Without the excuse of the aches and pains of old age, the younger generation abuses prescription medication and street drugs. One third of the young adults ages 12-25 who abuse drugs reported that they had recently abused prescription drugs, including painkillers and tranquilizers.

Kids even abuse prescription psychotherapeutic drugs these days.

Drug abuse influenced the young American culture since the 60s and obviously still does. People are still getting high – they are just using different dealers.

If you know someone whose recreational use has gone too far and they are out of control, then call Narconon. 877-413-3073.

Ryan O'Neil Success Story

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/indexd?blogid=7&year=2008&month=09&day=18

Ryan O’Neil looks pretty good for being 67 years old but he needs to grow up and put the drugs behind him. While some of us still remember the phrase “Being in love means never having to say you’re sorry” unfortunately many of the younger generation know Ryan O’Neil as the father as Tatum O’Neil – the guy who has been arrested a few times.

This time he was arrested on suspicion of narcotics possession, along with his son. Redmond, his son was allegedly in possession of methamphetamine and there was a vial in Ryan O’Neil’s bedroom.

Tatum O’ Neil, understanding the struggles of addiction because of her personal experience came out in defense of the two.

Stories like this are sad for a number of reasons. No one really likes to see a celebrity deal with their pain publicly. Also when long-term struggles with addiction are made so public, it gives the impression that recovery is all but impossible and individuals are loathe to attempt it.

There are plenty of stories of successful recovery from addiction and we need to hear more about them, especially during September – recovery month.

You can learn about others’ success or become one yourself.

My day

My day started normally about 7:10 am this morning. Alarm went off and I knew it was time to go to Narconon of Ga to work and help people. I always wake up looking forward to it. Anyway, I got ready and left for work and worked myself through the Atlanta traffic of Friday morning, YUCK! I got to Narconon about 9:30 to start my day that is usually suppose to start about 10am. I always like to be early rather than late. Anyway, I finally got a key to my house and I was sooo excited about it! I started working on different things for Narconon and how to get the word out about the program. Lots of ideas flooded my head. I keep thinking, I work for a drug education and rehabilitation center, what better job could I have to help people? My bosses started coming in one by one finally the last got there about 12. We did our educational videos and talked with the students like we do everyday. Well, today was a little special, in the middle of our Friday meeting I was called and told my son was being rushed to the hospital because he busted his head open! I am almost an hour from home and my son is 1. Needless to say I freaked. I told my bosses at Narconon and they of course told me I could leave whenever I needed to. I finally left about 4 pm rushing home. Of course, more traffic! I didn't get to the hospital until 6:30!!! Geez...I couldn't believe it but he was ok. Just hungry because he had been there for so long. Well, I am now home and it is really time to try and wind down and go to bed and start again tomorrow. It's Saturday so it's all family time. Academy Award Winner Louis Gossett Jr. Joins Tens of Thousands of Americans Rallying in 80 Communities, Celebrating Recovery from Addiction
Recovery Bill of Rights to be released, calling nation to action to end the cycle of addiction

Last update: 10:48 a.m. EDT Sept. 19, 2008
ST. LOUIS, Sept 19, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Academy-Award Winning actor Louis Gossett, Jr. will join tens of thousands of people taking part Saturday in the national Rally for Recovery, which will be recognized with events in more than 80 communities across the United States.
This year, participants will also hail the release of the Recovery Bill of Rights, a statement of the principle that all Americans have a right to recover from addiction to alcohol and other drugs, during a ceremony at The Chain of Rocks Bridge Park in St. Louis. The Hands Across the Bridge event will serve as the national hub for activities happening nationwide.
"The Recovery Bill of Rights is a call to action for our elected officials and community leaders to break the cycle of addiction by empowering people who need treatment and ending housing and employment discrimination against people in recovery," said U.S. Representatives Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) and Jim Ramstad (R-MN), who are both in long-term recovery from addiction.
The goal of Saturday's events is to speak out for improved local, state and federal policies and to demonstrate the reality of recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. Participants are members of the recovery community, their friends, families and allies, who put a face and a voice on recovery from addiction and call for improved local, state and federal policies so that others in their communities may get the help they need. At the rallies, they will have an opportunity to personally endorse The Recovery Bill of Rights.
Gossett, who is in long-term recovery from addiction, is the keynote speaker at the St. Louis event and will join hands in unity with more than 1,000 people in forming a human chain across the bridge linking Missouri and Illinois.
Faces & Voices of Recovery, the leading national organization mobilizing those in long-term recovery from addiction, is the sponsor and organizer for Saturday's event, which coincides with National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
"We are rallying for recovery to help make change happen at all levels," said Carol McDaid, chair of Faces & Voices of Recovery. "Our focus today and every day is on the rights of people struggling with addiction to get well and the rights of people who are no longer using alcohol or other drugs to get their lives back together. We will be distributing The Recovery Bill of Rights to doctors, schools, treatment and community centers across the country."

Narconon Sauna Detoxification Success Story

My drug and alcohol history includes 30 years of intermittent chronic and acute drinking, most recently a three month drinking binge resulting in medical detox and admission to Narconon. Drug use includes heavy narcotic and muscle relaxant use due to 4 major surgeries, pre and post op pain. Of particular note during the past two years is an abusive marriage and resultant divorce. My ex-husband proceeded to stalk me and I lost my ability to sleep, rest, relax or even think clearly. I develop anxiety, insomnia and had panic attacks.

The Narconon sauna process restored my ability to sleep. I am usually rested now and rarely experience any anxiety at all. I haven’t had a panic attack since I arrived here. My social interests have mostly been restored.

Sauna and rest have had a remarkable effect on my mental acuity. Where I was having treat difficulty recalling names, dates facts and events, I now easily access chat information without effort. My vocabulary is restored. I would characterize my mind prior to sauna as “full”. I seemed unable to take in new information or problem solve in the moment. These difficulties disappeared rapidly in sauna.

The sauna had an amazing effect on y skin, making it shiny and soft. My eyes are clearer than I can recall. I feel “pretty” for the first time in a long time.

I absolutely feel ready to participate in the next phase of Narconon and in life in general. Thank you for this opportunity.

Rehab vs. Incarceration

Alternatives to Incarceration?
The U.S. Sentencing Commission plans to issue a list recommendation on alternatives to incarceration and for some, the notion is not popular.
Given that 44 billion dollars was spent on corrections last year it is no surprise that there would be some objection to attempts to change the system. The U.S. Justice system for one, made the statement through spokesperson, Laura Sweeny "We do not believe the use of alternatives should be expanded without further rigorous research showing their effectiveness in promoting public safety,"
The Criminal Justice Legal Foundation also objected through spokesperson Michael Rushford, president of the crime-victim advocacy.
While no one wants wanton criminals let loose on society, the fact is that unless the two million that are incarcerated now remain in prison for the rest of their lives, they will be out of jail one day and society will have to deal with it
. Without any type of rehabilitation, many will just be more hardened and street smart than when they entered prison and the public will not be any safer For those offenders who are addicts, it simply means time and money wasted that could have been spent rehabilitating the addict into a productive member of society.
Regardless of what any of us think about this, unless Congress rejects the recommendations made by the U.S. Sentencing commission they will become law.
